Twitter (X) character counter
Paste your post and see how much of the 280 is left, counted the way X counts: every link is 23, most text is 1 and Chinese, Japanese and many emoji are 2. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
280 goes fast. Links cost 23 however short they look.
How to use it
- Paste or type your post.
- Watch the bar: it turns amber as you near the limit and red when you pass it.
- Switch to Display name or Username to check those fields.
Good to know
- Every link counts as 23 characters however long it is, so a long URL costs no more than a short one.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, and many emoji, count as 2 each, so a post in those scripts holds fewer of them.
- Longer posts exist for some paid accounts; this counter checks the standard 280 limit, and the figures are a close match to X's published counting rules.
About the Twitter (X) character counter
How does X count characters?
Most Latin letters, digits and punctuation count as 1. Many other characters, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean, and most emoji, count as 2. Every link counts as 23. This tool applies those rules, so its number should match what X shows when you post.
Do hashtags and @mentions count?
Yes, they're ordinary characters. The counter shows how many you've used so you can see what they cost.
What are the limits for usernames and display names?
A username can be up to 15 characters and a display name up to 50. Switch the mode above to check either.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The count happens in your browser as you type.
