Share of voice calculator

Share of voice is how much of the conversation each brand gets. Enter your brand and up to four rivals and see each one's share of the mentions over the past week.

Who's getting talked about? Give me the names and I'll count.

How to use it

  1. Enter your brand and a competitor, and add up to three more.
  2. Press the button. I count each name on Hacker News and Bluesky over the past seven days.
  3. Read each brand's share of the total.

Good to know

  • Use the name people write, not the legal name. "Ledgerline", not "Ledgerline Software Ltd".
  • A common word as a name will be over-counted. The count can't tell your brand from a namesake, which is why the app reads each post before it counts it.
  • Share of voice is a direction, not a score. Run it again next week and see which way it moved.

About the Share of voice calculator

What is share of voice?

Your brand's mentions as a share of all the mentions for you and your competitors together. If you get 30 of 100, your share of voice is 30%.

Where are the mentions counted?

On Hacker News and Bluesky, because both can be counted for free. Other platforms bill us for every search, so they are in the app, not here.

Why does Bluesky stop at 100?

Bluesky returns at most 100 posts for a search. If a brand hits 100, the page says "100 or more" and the share is a floor, not an exact number.

Are the counts exact?

Hacker News is exact. Both include posts that only share the name, so a name that is also a common word will be too high. Sniffington's app reads each post and rules those out.

Do you keep the names I enter?

No. We don't store them. Results are cached for an hour so a repeat is instant.
