Your brand shares its name. Here's what that does to your alerts

· Sniffington

Type a brand name into any alert tool and you get every post that contains it. That sounds fine until you look at what comes back. We ran three checks on 4 October 2026 with Sniffington's own AI check, and the namesakes won every time.

Three brands, three kinds of noise

  • Linear, the issue tracker. With no description, 118 posts from the past week on Reddit, Hacker News and Bluesky matched the word. Of the newest 18, none were about the product. One was physics. That's what a common word does.
  • Mercury, checked as a name someone might pick. 106 posts in 30 days. Of the 18 we checked, 15 meant something else: the planet, Freddie Mercury, horoscopes. Three were businesses, a security company and a Razer gaming device among them.
  • Raycast, the Mac launcher. On Hacker News, the top match for the past month was a raycasting project called Entombed in a Raycaster. Told it was "a Mac launcher app", the check ruled out 17 of the newest 18 results.

None of those posts are wrong. They just aren't about you. An alert tool that sends them all costs you a few minutes each, every day, until you stop reading the alerts. That's the real failure: the post that matters arrives on the day you've given up.

Four things that help

  • Describe your brand in one line. "An invoicing app for freelancers" is enough for a model to tell your Ledgerline from the road in Leeds. It's the single biggest fix.
  • Say what you get confused with. If your name is also a planet, a singer or a programming term, write it down. Sniffington takes that as a hint when it reads each post.
  • Read the rejects now and then. Every post Sniffington drops goes to Ruled out with a sentence saying why. Skim it weekly. If it threw out something real, put it back and it learns from your reason.
  • Check a name before you pick it. Our free business name checker reads 30 days of posts and tells you how many already mean something else.

If you want to see what your own name pulls in today, the free social listening tool runs the same check on Reddit, Hacker News and Bluesky without a sign-up.
